FAQ 1

WHAT IS AIAS?

AIAS is student run organization under the AIA, American Institute of Architects, aimed to provide resources for current architecture students in their journey to becoming a full on architect. AIAS provides students with opportunities to collaborate with other architecture students from all over the country, and the world at times, at conferences and social events such as Forum and Quad. If you are interested in joining, please feel free to either click here, where you can sign up online or ask an AIAS member to help you with registration.

FAQ 2

WHAT DO I GAIN FOR JOINING?

By joining you not only gain connections with students and faculty within NYIT, but in the professional world as well. AIAS has a number of events that allow you to socialize and acquaint yourself with a number of people, and you could possibly gain job opportunities from these meetings. Now is the time to start developing that group of contacts!

FAQ 3

WHAT IS FORUM AND QUAD?

Forum is a conference that happens once every year around New Years. It is a chance for students to meet up with other AIAS member schools from across the country and to also meet with professionals and engage in a number of different conversations and topics. It is set up to expose you to a number of different possibilities in the field of architecture and to help you develop some of the skills you learn in school. Every year Forum is in a different city, so this will also give you the opportunity to travel across the country.

Quad follows a similar structure as Forum, the only difference is it is tailored to students in a certain Quad. NYIT is a part of the Northeast Quad, so we collaborate with other students in NY, NJ, PA, MD, DC, DE, and Canada, just to name a few. Quad is normally in or near March, close to Spring Break.

FAQ 4

HOW CAN I HEAR ABOUT AIAS EVENTS?

You can be the first to hear about AIAS events by joining our mailing list at General Meetings and during events, or simply asking a board member about it. There are also posters placed throughout the studios for upcoming events, just incase email is not your thing!

FAQ 5

WHAT ARE THE GENERAL MEETINGS?

General Meetings are every Thursday during free hour in the 5th Floor Studio center space in EGGC.

FAQ 6

WHAT KINDS OF EVENT DOES AIAS DO?

A majority of the events are geared at getting students to get out there and meet with professionals, such as our Firm Tours where we go to both large and small firms and get students exposed. There more you get involved the more AIAS will be able to tailor the tours to accommodate for the different firms you would like to get into.

AIAS also holds a number of workshops meant to help students in areas they may require extra help in. These workshops are free and during free hour and we encourage students to bring in their work so that we can help you on what you are actually working on rather than examples that may not exactly apply.

FAQ 7

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

All you need to do is tell a board member where you are interested in helping out, and they will get you set up with the appropriate person.

FAQ 8

WHAT IS FREEDOM BY DESIGN (FBD)?

FBD, or Freedom By Design, is a subdivision of AIAS. Under the supervision of professionals, FBD allows students to complete a project from the first day of the design process to the last day of hammering a nail. Students gain experience in every step of the project, which looks great on your resume!
